An accomplished real estate executive and President of Makras Real Estate in San Francisco, Victor Makras serves as a Board Member of the San Francisco State University Center for Modern Greek Studies. Founded in 1981, the SFSU Center for Modern Greek Studies exists as a teaching, research, and administrative program of the SFSU College of Humanities. According to its mission statement, the Center seeks to “promote the study of modern Greek language, literature, history, and culture in relation to its earlier Hellenic and Byzantine civilizations.” The SFSU Center for Modern Greek Studies also maintains the Nikos Kazantzakis Chair, established in 1983 to support the academic and cultural activities of the program.

As part of its academic programming, the SFSU Center for Modern Greek Studies awards an Interdisciplinary Minor in Modern Greek Studies at the Bachelor of Arts level. Coursework within the program includes Modern Greek language, literature, history, and anthropology. To supplement its academic offerings, the SFSU Center for Modern Greek Studies organizes a number of cultural events such as film screenings, guest lectures, art exhibits, and concerts.

The SFSU Center for Modern Greek Studies also contains a comprehensive selection of literary works, housing approximately 2,000 volumes at the Kyriakos Tsakopoulos Modern Greek Studies Collection. Additionally, the SFSU Center for Modern Greek Studies plays host to the Northern California Greek American Archive, which houses a number of oral histories and written materials relating to the experience of Greek American immigrants in California.

The off-campus, non-profit Modern Greek Studies Foundation awards an annual scholarship named after Emeritus Professor and founding director of the SFSU Center for Modern Greek Studies Thanasis Maskaleris.
